Venice meeting on Fluctuations in small complex systems

22nd to 24th October 2012
Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti
Palazzo Franchetti

In this meeting, we want to bring together scientists from the fields of biological physics and soft matter, to address and discuss novel aspects of the role of fluctuations in small systems ranging from individual DNA molecules to living cells. With emerging experimental tools allowing us to mechanically probe and manipulate individual DNA molecules and to follow the trajectories of individual biomolecules in living cells we enter a new era of understanding biological function. Physicists contribute to this development both experimentally and theretically, by explaining the physical origin of the observed behaviour. From a physics point of view this development is the more exciting as it opens up new vistas, due to the small size of the systems involved: thermal fluctuations control the behaviour of the systems and their dynamics. Covering topics such as the mechanical behaviour of DNA, the denaturation of its double helix, DNA's interaction with other biomolecules during cellular regulation, as well as the specific motion of these biomolecules in the cell, the meeting is collecting new views towards a closed picture of the biological function of living cells.
The participants are from leading international labs, and combine experimentalists and theorists working in the field.
