July 18 - 23, 2022
Continuing a long series of Summer Schools on Environmental Dynamics that began in 1987, ISTITUTO VENETO DI SCIENZE LETTERE ED ARTI (IVSLA) is organizing the first of a cycle Schools specifically devoted to the study of Climate Science.
The School will take place in Venice at Palazzo Franchetti, in the period July 18-23, 2022. It will focus on "Climate Change in the Coastal Zone" and is aimed at doctoral students and postdocs in Climate Science or related fields.
The lectures, as in the tradition of the School, should consist of a total of 6 'hours' (of 45 minutes each, that means a customary framework of 3 class periods of about 90 minutes) within the week, according to a program that is drafted below. The lectures are intended to focus on open, important problems and cutting-edge research and to stimulate the interaction among the participants. Much emphasis is placed on e-learning ex ante and ex post, and thus we plan to post relevant papers to be downloaded by prospective students as preliminary reading, and to use the web at length for getting/posting the lectures' materials.
We place great emphasis on the organization of group activities by the attendees, whose scope is the development, on the basis of the themes and ideas discussed during the lectures, of possibly original research projects and collaborations. The minimum requirement is for each group to present the results of their work (a formal presentation to the audience) at the closing meeting, where we also give each participant a certificate of participation. In several cases of past schools, working groups have elaborated the early ideas developed in the collective discussions in the months following the school, and have submitted for publication their results. Papers comprising the Lecturer in peer-reviewed outlets have been a source of great pride to participants and School organizers in the past. We thus hope that each lecturer will participate by steering independent thinking and collective work together with a few components of her/his own research group. On-site, we may rely on broad access to the web and facilities for in silico experiments. Typically, the collective work is stirred by an activator, identified among the more experienced attendees or from the Lecturer's group.
It is deemed that a realistic policy consists of reprinting (with permission upon the responsibility of the authors through contacts with the proper publishers) material (possibly published) selected by the lecturers, that we plan to post in the web site of the School and reprint in some form via the distinguished editorial collection of IVSLA. We expect from this a collection of state-of-the-art papers on the School's topic. Any original manuscript, however, would be more than welcome.
