ISO is a legal association, the members of which are the National Standards Bodies of some 130 countries supported by a Central Secretariat based in Geneva, Switzerland.
An International Standard embodies the essential principles of global openness and transparency, consensus and technical coherence. These are safeguarded through its development in ISO Technical Committee (ISO/TC). The foremost aim of International Standards is to facilitate the exchange of goods and services through the elimination of technical barrier to trade. The scope of ISO/TC 58 is to develop standards on the design, manufacture and testing of gas cylinders, on cylinders valves and fittings, on operational requirements and periodic inspection.
Gas cylinders are in a general sense transport containers for substances stored under pressure. Most of the standards in this field address are safety related because it is necessary to guarantee a sufficient safety margin to avoid exposing workers and the general public to unacceptable dangers.
