The first NEMB Venice workshop on Cancer Nanotechnology

October 11-12, 2012
Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti

The integration of Nanotechnology with biomedical research and practice has already shown profound effects on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a variety of diseases, including cancer, leading to a new scientific field known as Cancer Nanotechnology. Nanoparticle-based drug formulations are already available in the clinic for cancer treatment; multifunctional nanosystems with therapeutic and imaging capacity are currently under development; several nanotechnological platforms for the early detection of biomarkers have been proposed; nano/microrobotics for minimally invasive surgery and image-guided interventions are studied by several laboratories.
The First NEMB Venice Workshop on Cancer Nanotechnology will focus on the integration of Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Nanotechnology with the Biomedical Sciences to aid in addressing fundamental problems in cancer treatment and imaging under the guiding aim of being of true benefit to the humankind. It will provide a forum to understand how nanotechnology is currently impacting oncology and what the potentials are for the future. It will also serve to address the importance of crossdisciplinary collaborations and foster the interaction among European and world-wide groups actively involved in this field.
The Workshop will feature cutting-edge research in three thematic areas:
i) Multifunctional Nanoconstructs for imaging, drug delivery and ablation therapy; ii) Nanotechnology for early cancer detection and iii) Multiscale modeling and in vivo analysis of cancer progression. Current medical challenges will be presented by clinicians and scientists in the areas of cancer diagnosis, imaging and therapy. Specific attention will be given to multimodal imaging, poly-pharmacy treatment, early detection, robotics and multiscale modeling tools. Fabrication strategies, toxicity, ethical and societal impact of nanotechnology will also be addressed by the speakers. The First NEMB Venice workshop will engage about 25 speakers, by invitation only, with an emphasis on scientists who are internationally recognized experts in the field of Cancer Nanotechnology. About 100 posters and poster presenters will be selected upon submission of a 1-page abstract to participate at the workshop and discussion session.
