i) proposal of the "Inflammaging" theory of aging; among others, the original paper "Franceschi C et al., Inflamm-aging. An evolutionary perspective on immunosenescence. Ann N Y Acad Sci. 2000 Jun; 908:244-54) has received 5291 citations, and the paper "Franceschi C and Campisi J, Chronic Inflammation (Inflammaging) and Its Potential Contribution to Age-Associated Diseases, The Journals of Gerontology: Series A 69 (Suppl_1), S4-S9, has received 3575 citations;                                               
ii) study and biological characterizations of centenarians as a model of healthy aging;
iii) discovery of important characteristics of immunosenescence in humans;                       
iv) pioneering studies on omics of human aging and longevity (genetics, epigenetics, proteomics, metabolomics, metagenomics, glycomics).
Coordinator of European large collaborative projects:
GEHA (GEnetics of Heathy Aging, 2004-2010; 7.2M€); NU-AGE (Mediterranean Diet for the elderly, 2011-2016; 9M€); PROPAG-AGEING (Aging and Parkinson disease, 2015-2019; 6M€); ADAGE (Alzheimer disease; 2016-2019; 1.3M€); 
Partner/WP leader of several EU projects: PROTEOMAGE; RISTOMED; MARK-AGE; MYOAGE; IDEAL; COBRA; MISSION-T2D; HUMAN; MYNEWGUT.
